Why Was Activation Implemented in BibleWorks?

BibleWorks wants to emphasize at the outset that we continue to believe the Word of God has been freely provided to us and should never be sold (John 2:16). However, the package in which the Word is provided does take effort to produce, and it is necessary to provide for the physical needs of the people who provide that effort. Some of this compensation is provided to those who license to BibleWorks the fruit of the effort they have put into developing the texts BibleWorks contains. Other compensation goes toward the material production and distribution of the BibleWorks product. A modest amount goes to the members of the small BibleWorks staff to support their families. The sum of all this compensation is roughly the cost of a BibleWorks end-user license: if there is anything left over, it is plowed back into the product to reduce the cost for future customers.

When a person stealthily makes an unlicensed copy of BibleWorks, he steals the cost of that license from all the people above. Unless further action is taken, there are then two options: BibleWorks can go out of business, or BibleWorks can pass the cost of this theft on to other customers. Because neither of these options is right, BibleWorks has chosen to implement an activation scheme that will make the product more difficult to steal. This scheme will reduce the accumulated cost of theft to all legitimate BibleWorks customers, giving these legitimate customers over time more for their money. Please consider this benefit your compensation for the one-time aggravation of activation.

As reported here, it is estimated that over 40% of all software in use worldwide has been stolen, and that this percentage is growing. While we don't believe this high a percentage applies to BibleWorks, we do know of an increasing number of attempts to steal it. It is our prayer that God will lead those engaged in this crime to repentance and that activation will be used by Him, among His other means, to confront many with their sin and with the provision He has made for them to be cleansed in Christ.
