This guide was written to help those who encounter problems with the Updater in BibleWorks. The Updater is accessed by clicking Help > (BibleWorks on the Internet >) Check for Updates.
Step 1: Confirm that there is an active Internet connection.
a. Open an Internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) and try to connect to an Internet site such as www.BibleWorks.com
(If an Internet site cannot be accessed, the connection must first be established in order to proceed.)
b. If the Internet connection is active, then continue to step 2.
Step 2: Can BibleWorks connect to the Internet?
a. Verify that a software firewall is not blocking access.
If a software firewall is running on the PC, verify that BibleWorks is not on the Do not allow Internet access list of applications.
(Check the documentation that came with the program for information on how to make these settings.)
b. Verify that other Internet-related software is not interfering.
Sometimes, other utility programs may provide interference that prevents the successful operation of the updater. This may be in the form of internet security programs, parental control programs, or a number of others. These programs, in the process of doing what they were designed to do, keep BibleWorks from communicating with the server and downloading patch files. To address this issue, one must make adjustments in the settings of those programs to allow BibleWorks to function. Consult the documentation that accompanies the utility software for information on how to make those settings.
c. Confirm that the proxy settings in the BibleWorks updater (Options>Configure proxy settings) are properly set. If a proxy server is not used, confirm that the "Use proxy to connect to Internet" setting is not checked.
Step 3: Does BibleWorks appear to download a patch from the Internet, but then fail to properly apply it?
a. Confirm that only one copy of BibleWorks is running.
(If two or more are running, close all of them, start BibleWorks anew, then try again to run the updater.)
b.  If you encounter the message "Couldn't Open Patch File" then click here for information to address the issue.t.

Step 4: Do Updates Continue to Show in the list, even after they have been selected and applied?

        * Confirm that the setting Show downloaded/hidden patches is not selected.  This setting is found on the Options drop-down menu on the Windows Updater Window toolbar.

If you have installed BibleWorks 7 Revision A01 or before under Windows Vista or later, and have not run the "UACFix" patch, the update process will usually malfunction. If this is the case, click HERE for instructions to follow to correct the condition causing the problem.
