BibleWorks permits, by the use of its Version Database Compiler, customers to export an existing BibleWorks Bible version, make changes (perhaps adding Strong's numbers, cross-references, notes, or even textual modifications), and recompiling the version under the same or different version name for future use. The process to be taken is in two main parts.

1. Export the Existing Version Database
a. Click Tools on the menu bar and choose Export Database from the drop-down menu.
b. In the Text Export window that displays,
1.) Find and select the name of the version to be exported by clicking once on it.
2.) Place a checkmark in Export notes and cross references if applicable.
3.) Click OK to proceed.
c. In the Export File window that displays, perform the following:
1.) Type an abbreviation name for the version to be compiled.
It is a good idea to give this file the same three or four letter abbreviation that you will use for the compiled version itself. If, for example, you want to recompile the LUT version, you may want to use the name LUTX for the recompiled version.
2.) Set the Save as Type to 'Text (*.txt)'
3.) Click the Save button to execute the action.
4.) Click the Close button to close the Export File dialog box.
2. Create the Version Database with the Version Database Compiler
a. Click Tools on the menu bar and choose Version Database Compiler from the drop-down menu.
b. Click Close on the information message box that displays.
c. Make the following settings for the version to be compiled.
1.) For item 1, Database Description File, click the button labeled New.
2.) In the Open dialog box that appears, type the version abbreviation, used in previous steps, into the File name field, then click Open.
3.) For item 2, Database Raw Text File, click the button labeled Browse.
4.) Find and select the text database that had been saved in the export action, described above. Click Open.
5.) For item 3a, All Versions, enter the following values:
a.) Description - A short description of the recompiled text, for example, LutherBible 1984 (Expanded)
b.) Version ID - This should be the same abbreviation used in previous steps.
c.) Version # - Select any number between 7000 and 7999.
d.) Language - Find and select the language closest to that of the text version.
6.) For item 3c, All Versions Except Greek and Hebrew, enter the following values:
a.) Locale - Find and select the language group closest to the text version.
b.) Checkboxes - Check any boxes that apply.
7.) For item 4, Build Database, place a check in the box for Install after Compiling.
d. Perform the Compile action
1.) Click the Compile button.
2.) Results will appear in the Build Database window.
a.) If the action is successful, the version will be available for use.
b.) If the action is unsuccessful, information about it will appear in the window. Note the information, and consult chapter 38 of the BibleWorks Online Help for additional information.
A common reason for failure is that the exported database was saved in some format other than .txt. One can simply perform the export action again, making certain to choose the text (txt) format.
The process outlined above can be repeated for as many versions as necessary.
