How Are Hits Counted for Command Line and GSE Searches?

It is not uncommon for people to report what they believe to be hit count errors that are actually correct. What follows is an explanation for how BibleWorks counts hits both on the Command Line and in the Graphical Search Engine.
Let’s take the following AND search in the NIV as an example. Go ahead and perform this Command Line search and then look at the number of hits shown for Acts 1:13 (3 hits).

Many would conclude that this search is giving an erroneous hit count of 3, but this is actually correct when you count all possible permutations that result in a hit. Let's take a closer look at Acts 1:13 to see how BibleWorks came up with 3 hits for the verse.
Here is the text of Acts 1:13. With a number added next to each of the occurrences of James to make the subsequent discussion easier to follow.
NIV Acts 1:13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James1 and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James2 son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James3.
Let’s now construct a list of all possible permutations of these five words that would result in a hit for our AND search:
peter james1 john
peter james2 john
peter james3 john
Since there are 3 possible permutations, this is the number of hits BibleWorks gives for this verse.
Let’s now take the following OR search in the NIV as an example. Execute this Command Line search and then look at the number of hits shown for Acts 1:13 (15 hits).
Let’s now construct a list of all possible permutations of these five words that would result in a hit for our OR search:
peter
james1
james2
james3
john
peter james1
peter james2
peter james3
peter john
james1 john
james2 john
james3 john
peter james1 john
peter james2 john
peter james3 john
Since there are 15 possible permutations, this is the number of hits BibleWorks gives for this verse.
If you do not want BibleWorks to calculate hits by counting all possible permutations, you can turn this off: (also see screenshot below)
Click Tools>Options>Option Flags.
Under “Command Line Search Options” remove the check next to “Compute Search Window hits by permutation.”
If you turn this off, both of the searches discussed above will give hits counts simply as the number of words in the verse that are highlighted. In both of our example above that would be 5.
The Graphical Search Engine (GSE) does not have an option for turning this on or off. The GSE will always counts hits for AND searches by permutation but for OR searches the GSE will never count hits by permutation. That is the GSE will always give 3 hits for the AND search example above and 5 for the OR example.
